Boarding School in Lucknow: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Choose a Hostel

Every boarding school in Lucknow says the children are safe and happy. These ten questions help you find out whether that is true, and what to look for on a hostel visit.

Boarding School in Lucknow: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Choose a Hostel

Choosing a boarding school in Lucknow, or a residential CBSE school in Lucknow, is one of the bigger decisions a family makes. You are handing over far more than your child's education. You are trusting the school with their meals, sleep, health and evenings. Every school will tell you the children are safe and happy. These ten questions help you check.

We use them to describe our own hostel at Siddhartha Global School, Malihabad. You should ask every school on your list the same questions, ours included.

1. Who supervises evening study, and what are their qualifications?

This is the most important question, and many parents never ask it. In many hostels evening study is supervised by a warden whose job is to keep the room quiet. That is not the same as teaching. Ask whether a subject teacher is present during prep.

At Siddhartha Global School, boarders have two hours of supervised prep every evening with a subject teacher present on the floor. A doubt in maths or science gets cleared that evening, instead of waiting for the next class or for a tuition teacher.

2. Where does the warden live?

A warden who lives on the floor knows when a child is unwell, homesick or awake at midnight. A warden who is on call from another building finds out the next morning. At our hostel, a resident warden lives on each floor.

3. What does a room look like, and how many share it?

Ask to see a real room, not a show room. Count the beds. Check for a study table and somewhere to lock personal things. Our rooms are furnished with a bed, a study table and lockable storage for every child. The junior wing has four to six beds to a room, and rooms get smaller as students move up.

4. What do the children eat?

Ask who plans the menu and whether you can read it. At Siddhartha Global School one common dining hall serves the whole hostel, and the weekly menu is planned with the school doctor and pinned on the notice board. Special dietary needs are handled when the office is told in advance. Visit at a mealtime if you can, and taste the food.

5. What happens when a child falls ill at night?

Ask about the nearest nurse and doctor, and how the school would get a child to hospital at 2 am. Our campus has an infirmary with a resident nurse, an isolation room, a doctor on call and a vehicle available at any hour.

6. How is the campus secured?

Ask who can enter, how visitors are logged and who checks children in and out on outings or holidays. At Siddhartha Global School security runs around the clock, and the gate log records every entry and exit.

7. How often can we talk to and visit our child?

Good boarding schools have clear rules on phone calls and visiting days, written down and explained at admission. Unclear rules lead to disappointment on both sides. Ask for them in writing. Our office explains the current calling times and visiting days to every hostel family before admission.

8. What do boarders do after classes?

A boarding school is a whole week of life, not just a school day with a bed added. Ask what happens between the last class and dinner, and what happens on Sundays. With a 14-acre campus, our students have open grounds for games, a cricket academy on campus and space for activities that a small city plot cannot offer.

9. Is the school itself strong academically?

A good hostel attached to a weak school is still a weak choice. The hostel should belong to a strong CBSE school in Lucknow first. Check the school's CBSE affiliation on the SARAS portal (saras.cbse.gov.in) and read its Mandatory Public Disclosure. Siddhartha Global School is affiliated to CBSE up to Class 12 under affiliation number 2133939. Boarders attend the same classes as day students.

10. What is the full cost, and what is included?

Ask for the hostel fee in writing, and ask exactly what it covers: meals, laundry, study material, medical care, outings. Ask what is extra. Compare the full yearly cost between schools, not the headline figure. Our admission office will give you the full fee structure on request.

Is boarding the right step for your child?

Not every child is ready for boarding at the same age, and that is fine. Talk to your child, visit together and let them see the rooms and meet the wardens. If you are not sure yet, day boarding is a good middle path. Your child stays at school for supervised study and games and comes home every evening. Siddhartha Global School offers hostel, day boarding and day scholar options, so you can start with one and change later.
