Day scholar, day boarder or full boarder? How the three options differ at a CBSE residential school in Lucknow, and how to decide which one suits your child.
Many parents in Lucknow like the idea of a residential school but hesitate at the last step. Is my child ready to live away from home? Will they miss us? Is it fair to send a child to a hostel when the school is only an hour away? A good residential school does not ask you to make that decision all at once. Between day schooling and full boarding there is a middle path, day boarding. This article explains the difference between the three options and how to decide which suits your child.
A day scholar comes to school in the morning, attends classes and goes home when school ends.
A day boarder comes in the morning, attends classes, then stays on campus for lunch, rest, sport and supervised study in the afternoon and evening, then goes home. Homework is finished at school, with teachers available.
A full boarder lives on campus during the term. Meals, study, sport, health care and rest all happen at school, under the care of resident wardens and teachers.
Siddhartha Global School, a CBSE residential school in Malihabad, Lucknow, offers all three.
Day boarding suits families where both parents work and evenings at home are rushed. It also suits children who need structure for homework but aren't yet ready to sleep away from home, and children in Class IX and above who need more study time without a full move.
The biggest advantage is that homework and revision happen with a teacher nearby, not at the dining table at 10 pm. Parents get their child home in the evening with the day's work already done.
Day boarding also works as a trial run. A child gets to know the campus, the teachers and the routine. Many families decide on full boarding after a term or two, once the child is comfortable.
Full boarding is worth considering when:
- The daily journey to a good school is long, and hours are lost in transport every day
- Your child does better with a fixed routine for study, sport and sleep
- Your child is entering the board-exam years (Class IX to XII) and needs steady, supervised preparation
- Your child is serious about a sport such as cricket and needs daily training alongside school
- Your family's work involves travel or transfers, and you want continuity in your child's schooling
In our hostel, the boarding day includes two hours of evening prep with a subject teacher present. Doubts are cleared the same evening, which matters most in Class X and Class XII. At four o'clock every boarder is on a ground or in an activity room, and those who want serious cricket training can join the cricket academy on campus.
Before choosing, sit down as a family and talk through these:
- Does my child sleep well away from home, for example at a relative's house or a school trip?
- Is my child usually able to manage their own things, such as clothes, books and a timetable?
- Is homework currently a daily battle at home?
- How long does the daily journey to school take, and what is it costing in time and energy?
- Does my child actually want to try boarding? Have we asked them?
If most answers point towards independence and the journey is long, full boarding may be right. If your child is unsure, start with day boarding.
Whichever option you choose, the same standards apply:
- CBSE affiliation, which you can verify on the school's Mandatory Disclosure page
- Supervised study with subject teachers, not only wardens
- Health care on campus: our infirmary has a resident nurse, an isolation room and a doctor on call
- Safe, supervised premises: our campus has round-the-clock supervision and a gate log of every entry and exit
- Open space for sport: our 14-acre campus is on the Mohan–Malihabad Road, away from city traffic
If your child starts as a day boarder and later wants to board, the move is simple because they already know the teachers and routine. Talk to the admission office about hostel availability for the next term.
The best way to decide is to see the campus on a working day. Look at the study hall during evening prep, see the hostel rooms and talk to the wardens.
